Michael Quinn Patton just came out with the fourth edition of his Qualitative Research and Evaluation Methods book and in it you’ll find 9 of my cartoons. The new cartoons are based largely on a series of ruminations added to each chapter (you can find a few rumination examples over at better evaluation).
Today’s post includes four of the new cartoons published in the book. I’ve also included a couple that were left on the cutting room floor. Enjoy!
And if you’re interesting in picking up Michael’s new book, head on over to Sage and use the discount code PATTON20 at checkout. The code should be good for 20% off.
Confident and Incompetent
Real Evidence
Convenience Interview Protocol
Easy to Find
GPS Rigor Mortis
This one didn’t make it into the book. It’s based on a rumination Patton calls Research Rigor Mortis.
Qualitative Bully
I liked this one but it was a little too wordy to make it into the book.
Cool! I could see the last one as a strip showing the interviewer talking labelled something like: Introduction, Basic questions, Interruption, Personal Story, Dissatisfaction with data.
Very true. Strangely, I did not discover the true power of multi-panel cartoons until reading Scott McCloud’s book on comics.
Active listening can be a very tricky skill to teach evaluators!
Wait, Wendy, are you saying we’re supposed to listen?
🙂
Literally laughed out loud at my desk about Qualitative Bully. Now my co-workers think I am odd. In fairness, they likely already thought that.
Nice. We’re all a little odd around here 🙂
The last one is my favorite!
Thanks Jen, it was my favorite too 🙂
FRESHSPECTRUM is continuously refreshing. Thank you Chris!
Thanks Karen, very kind of you to say 🙂
Chris – I keep your posts until I need the need for something to lift me up. Thank you.
My favorite is “real evidence” as it captures what I see all too often.
